New paparazzi photos appeared online on Tuesday (May 29) showing Benjamin in full Hendrix regalia with an outfit straight out of 1966 and an afro to match. In his full costume, Benjamin's resemblance to Hendrix is nothing short of striking.

Benjamin did his best to cover his face with his hands and hide his wardrobe with a robe, but photogs managed to capture almost every inch of the full costume.

Even though production has started on the long-in-development "All Is By My Side" and Benjamin seems raring to go, one big question mark still lingers over the project: Hendrix's music may not appear in the film at all. Earlier this month, Hendrix's estate very publicly denied the filmmakers' requests to feature the guitarist's songs in the movie.

How does a movie about a musician's life work without featuring any of the music? Only time will tell whether Hendrix's estate changes their position on the licensing or whether the filmmakers find some creative way around the issue.

"All Is By My Side" is being directed by John Ridley and will tell the story of Hendrix's time in England during 1966 and 1967.

TOKYO (AP) ? Japan's leader felt fearful and helpless during last year's nuclear disaster and lacked experts capable of giving him guidance, he testified Monday in his first response to a public investigative inquiry on the crisis.

Naoto Kan resigned in September after being criticized for government failures during the disaster. He told the parliamentary panel he felt afraid when nuclear officials kept failing to explain conditions at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, where three reactors melted down following the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011.

Kan also said the country's nuclear emergency preparedness law, set up in 1999 after a fatal accident at a nuclear fuel processing plant, did not address a severe accident that would require hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate, as in Fukushima.

"Everything anticipated in the law was inadequate, and we had to go through all kinds of troubles that we didn't need," he said. For instance, the plant's off-site crisis management center, which had no protection for radiation or backup power, had to be abandoned.

Kan said nuclear officials sent from government offices and the utility operating the plant as his advisers were not useful, and he never received the kind of information he needed. Japan's main regulatory body, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, was particularly incapable, he said.

"I was frightened and felt helpless," he said. "You can't expect a nuclear expert to be prime minister or Cabinet minister, so we need top regulatory officials to provide expertise and help us. We didn't have those people."

NISA's top officials, who are not nuclear experts, have acknowledged the need to improve their resources.

Officials have also said information disclosure was slow and at times wrong, particularly in the immediate aftermath. They also cited poor communication and coordination between nuclear regulators, utility officials and the government.

The crisis, the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl in 1986, also revealed problems of the cozy ties between the nuclear industry and sympathetic government regulators ? known as "the nuclear village" ? that have prompted a culture of complacency. He called that "a root of the illness" of Japan and must be destroyed to create a fully effective regulatory system.

The government led by his successor, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, had planned to revise the regulatory body, but the plan has been delayed as opposition lawmakers demanded more independence from the influence of the promoters.

Noda is desperately trying to restart two reactors in western Japan to curb the summer's power crunch, though the process has been delayed due to opposition from nearby towns, a move seen as backpedaling from Kan's push for a nuclear-free society.

Some 100,000 residents from around the plant have evacuated due to radiation contamination in the area. Japan declared stability at the plant in December, but it runs on makeshift equipment and its earthquake resistance is a concern. Officials say it will take about 40 years to decommission the plant.

A worst-case scenario envisioned by the head of the Japan Atomic Energy Commission two weeks after last year's accident warned that a melting of the fuel rods at the No. 4 reactor would require the evacuation of 30 million people just from the greater Tokyo area.

Mark Borris Aldonza, a 17-year-old biology student from the Far Eastern University, is the country?s lone representative to the pool of regional finalists competing in the Google Science Fair 2012.

Aldonza is one of the 10 finalists out of hundreds in Asia under 17-18 year-old category and one of the 90 regional finalists out of the thousands who joined the 2012 Google Science Fair, a global online science competition for teenagers launched by the search giant last year.

He received an official acceptance letter from Google stating also that he will get a Chromebook to be shipped by June.

His research, "Novel Catalytic Effects and Molecular Screening of Condensed Tannins (Proanthocyanidins) Treatment on Hardwood Charcoals for Burning Length Longevity, EMF Radiation Shielding and in Decreasing Five Greenhouse Gas Emissions," showed that the highest concentrations of condensed tannins (CTs) gave the highest significance in prolonging the burning length of hardwood charcoals, as an electromagnetic field radiation (EMF) radiation shielding material and in decreasing five greenhouse gas emissions.

In his research, he cited that "charcoal has definitely the potential to alleviate poverty, generate income and enhance livelihoods." He added that "by developing charcoals like what I've done in this research, there'll be more options for fuel use."

"Also, the contribution of charcoals to global warming will definitely be lessen. This research opens a wide scope of well-developed contributions for the potentials of hardwood charcoals in general."

Launched in 2011, Google Science Fair drew more than 7,000 entries last year from inquiring young minds located in 91 countries; the fair has three age categories, for teens from 13 to 18.

Thirteen of the 90 finalists have also been nominated for the Scientific American Science in Action award, the winner of which will be announced on June 6 along with 15 finalists.

These top 15 and the Science in Action winner will be flown out to Google?s headquarters in California in July for the celebratory finalist event and for the last round of judging, which will be conducted by a panel of renowned scientists and innovators.

The Grand Prize winner for this year?s search will receive a National Geographic expedition, a $50,000 scholarship grant from Google, a personal LEGO color mosaic, and a chance for an internship either at Google, Lego, or CERN.

Google has publicly unveiled new photos and the first video from the real view of their augmented reality glasses prototype. The images show what the wearer sees while reading a newspaper, catching a football in the backyard and helping a smiling child play on the jungle gym.

Such views don't necessarily represent anything people haven't seen before with head-mounted portable cameras. But they do hint at how Google Glasses could enable many people beyond geeky life-casters to capture a diverse array of moments in their lives ? the video shows the bouncy viewpoint of the Google Glasses wearer doing flips on a trampoline.

Google tech lead Max Braun showed off the photos and video at the Google + Photographer's Conference on May 23.

The Internet search giant has yet to show off real images or photos of how the glasses could seamlessly integrate virtual information with what a person sees in the real world. Its earlier unveiling of "Project Glass" included a concept video that imagined a wearer getting social calendar reminders and map directions in his field of view.

Still, many members of the public still seem enthusiastic about just having a pair of glasses with a small camera attached. One of the top comments on the YouTube video of the trampoline jumping simply stated "Shut up and take my money!"

The most popular comment of all had a perhaps tongue-in-cheek suggestion for using the Google Glasses ? "Good for POV [point-of-view] porn."

Your China-Economy Reading List for the Evening

In my first few hours back in Shanghai, I am newly amazed by the scale and pace of the building, of the ambitions, of the problems, and of the range of Chinese dreams realistic and fanciful. More on that after some sleep. For now:

1) From John Berthelsen of Asia Sentinel, this "Chart of the Day," showing the role of construction outlays in China's overall investment picture. The blue line is construction investment; the red line is total fixed asset investment; and the scale appears to be rate of increase year-on-year.

As Berthelsen says (in a note to me) about the pattern shown here, "You can see how construction spiked earlier this year as the government seeks to construct its way out of the current slump. Since they announced a flock of accelerated construction projects [this week], it should spike back again." I did an Atlantic article on the previous spike, in 2009, while still in Beijing.

One of the big themes in my new book is that the Chinese development model of the past 30 years has been very heavily reliant on the "when in doubt, build something" strategy. In the short term, this approach certainly keeps people employed -- and enriches others through real-estate transactions. In the medium term, it creates infrastructure that can help the country grow (subways, ports, the 100+ airports under construction). And in the long term, even some of the apparent white elephants and "ghost cities" may eventually be grown-into as Chinese demand goes up and up.

But too great a reliance on construction and real-estate boosterism creates various follow-on distortions, as I'll spell out another time. For now, thanks to Berthelsen for the chart.

The main point is that it is worth reading Kroeber's essay.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) ? Grammy-winning folk musician Doc Watson is in critical condition but improving at a North Carolina hospital after undergoing colon surgery.

Folklore Productions represents Watson and says he is improving after the surgery Thursday night at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. A hospital spokeswoman said he remained in critical condition Friday morning.

Watson's daughter, Nancy, told The Associated Press that the 89-year-old Watson fell Monday.

The blind singer and guitarist has won several Grammys, including a lifetime achievement award. He also received the National Medal of the Arts.

He's known as a master of the flatpicking style of guitar playing, He also started Merlefest, an annual gathering of musicians in Wilkesboro named after his son, who died in a tractor accident in 1985.
