KHOMO Black Rubberized Texture Samsung Galaxy S3 Back Cover Review

I did some shopping on Amazon the other day and found a couple covers for my Samsung Galaxy S3. I don’t normally use a case with my devices because I don’t like to add additional bulk. But the SGS3 is slippery and could really benefit from adding some grip. The KHOMO Black Rubber Back Cover [...]

(AP) ? Convicted D.C. sniper Lee Boyd Malvo said in a newspaper interview published Sunday that the devastated reaction of a victim's husband made him feel like "the worst piece of scum."

Malvo expresses remorse in the interview with The Washington Post (wapo.st/SrLk9I) and urged the families of victims to try and forget about him and his partner John Allen Muhammad so they can move on. Tuesday marks the 10th anniversary of the beginning of the deadly spree in the Washington area carried out by Malvo and John Allen Muhammad. The pair has been linked to 27 shootings across the country, including 10 fatal attacks in the Washington area.

Malvo, 27, told the Post in a rare interview that the look on the face of victim Linda Franklin's husband right after she was shot stands out in his memory of the rampage. Franklin, a 47-year-old FBI analyst, was killed as she and her husband loaded supplies outside a Home Depot in Falls Church, Va.

"They are penetrating," Malvo said of Ted Franklin's eyes. "It is the worst sort of pain I have ever seen in my life. His eyes ... Words do not possess the depth in which to fully convey that emotion and what I felt when I saw it. ... You feel like the worst piece of scum on the planet."

Malvo is serving a life sentence with no parole at a prison in southwest Virginia for killing Franklin. Muhammad was executed in Virginia in 2009

The sniper-style attacks all but paralyzed the nation's capital, as people were shot at random while going about their everyday life ? pumping gas, buying groceries, and for one young boy, as he went to school. The shooters used a high-powered rifle, firing from the trunk of a modified Chevy Caprice until they were tracked down at a Maryland rest stop.

Malvo also repeated previous assertions that he was manipulated by the older Muhammad during the string of attacks that took place when Malvo was 17. But he acknowledges: "I was a monster."

Malvo has declined to respond to many media requests, including letters from The Associated Press. He was interviewed in 2010 for a cable TV special.

When asked by the Post what he would say to victims' families, the remorseful Malvo said there's no way to properly convey an apology.

"We can never change what happened," Malvo said. "There's nothing that I can say except don't allow me and my actions to continue to victimize you for the rest of your life."

He added: "Don't allow myself or Muhammad to continue to make you a victim for the rest of your life. It isn't worth it."

Linda Franklin's father, Charles Moore, was incredulous about the idea that victims' relatives would be able to forget about what Malvo and Muhammad did.

"There's no way. I can't believe that. No one can go through something like that," Moore said in a phone interview with The Associated Press.

Moore said he believes his daughter's slaying contributed to his wife's death several years later.

"What he did just destroyed my family. I'll never be able to put it aside. Never," he said.

"There are things that stand out in your life that you think about. I'm 83 years old and I'll carry it to my grave."

UCLA researchers say last year's Carmageddon improved air quality

The reprieve lasted for only one weekend, but UCLA researchers say that last year's Carmageddon closure of the 405 Freeway rid Los Angeles of both traffic and another notorious problem: pollution.

Air quality near the closed 10-mile portion of the freeway reached levels 83% better than typical weekends, according to research released Friday by a team at UCLA's Institute of the Environment and Sustainability.

More striking, the researchers say, air quality also improved 75% in parts of West Los Angeles and Santa Monica, suggesting that whole swaths of residents stayed off the road in those areas. Overall, air quality across the region was 25% better than normal.

PHOTOS: Freeway construction noise

"Seeing such a dramatic reduction [in pollutants] in West L.A. was really quite surprising," said Suzanne Paulson, one of the professors leading the research. "It gives a very dramatic view of how clean the air could be."

As soon as traffic returned the following week, the improvements vanished, Paulson said. But area residents have another chance to breathe some fresh air starting Saturday.

More than 14 months after the initial closure, workers will again shut down a portion of the 405 Freeway, this time to demolish the northern end of the Mulholland Drive bridge. The construction is part of a $1-billion project that will include adding a carpool lane.

Paulson and Sam Atwood, a spokesman for the South Coast Air Quality Management District, both said they hope the freeway will one day be filled with electric vehicles or other low-emission cars. Atwood said Los Angeles still has the "worst air quality in the country." Research has linked exposure to near-roadway pollutants to an increased risk of asthma, heart attack, stroke, premature births and other health problems.

Atwood said the study's findings were not all that surprising but illustrate the "significant effect" cars, and especially trucks, have on air quality. He estimated that vehicular traffic is responsible for about half of all air pollution.

City leaders and transit officials have asked residents to stay out of their cars and "eat, shop and play locally" during this weekend's closure. But the average person probably won't be able to tell the difference in air quality even if cars stay home, Paulson said.

The professor and her colleague, Yifang Zhu, don't plan to conduct another study during this weekend's closure, and haven't yet published a paper on last year's findings.

So perhaps the only way for people to gauge the quality of the air they are breathing will be to look to the streets and count the cars.

Family fights blood disorders with music - Lehigh Valley Health Blog

September 28, 2012

Kana Mimaki

Blood disorders have marked Sandra Moran's family in devastating ways.

Her twin daughters were both diagnosed with Leukemia soon after their birth. Moran fought the disease by their daughters' side until their last days. She did the same for her sister, who died of Lymphoma at the age of 39.

The disease seems to have claimed a few battles, but the Morans are still fighting. And this time, they are using music.

Jessica and Christa Moran both loved music. They were constantly in pain and yet they kept their spirits high with songs and good humor.

Jessica died at 21 and Christa just shy of her 25th birthday. But they are remembered by family and friends as the 'Giggle Twins,' because their joy was never far from sight.

To honor them, and to help others suffering from blood disorders, the family has organized a piano duet concert on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 4 pm in the Wesley United Methodist Church, located at 2540 Center Street in Bethlehem. ?All proceeds from this concert will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of the Lehigh Valley.

Guest Performers include accomplished pianists Daniel L. Kramlich?and Kana Mimaki of Houston, TX., ?who will fuse musical notes from separate pianos. Kramlich, is music professor at?Houston Baptist University whose work has been?commissioned by the Arkansas Symphony. He is also known for his?arrangements for handbells and piano.

Mimaki?is the winner of the Los Angeles Liszt Competition, the International Russian Music Competition, and Catania International Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto Competition. She has?performed at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

Also performing will be guest soloist Ms. Karen Cocca of Allentown.

The program will include both classical and contemporary music as well as some original compositions by Dr. Kramlich, who was born and raised in the?Lehigh Valley. ??

"My mission is to raise as much as we can so that more people can have more hope in the future," Moran explains. ??

Obama summons world leaders to reject extremism

(AP) ? Confronting global tumult and Muslim anger, President Barack Obama exhorted world leaders Tuesday to stand fast against violence and extremism, arguing that protecting religious rights and free speech must be a universal responsibility and not just an American obligation.

"The impulse towards intolerance and violence may initially be focused on the West, but over time it cannot be contained," Obama warned the U.N. General Assembly in an urgent call to action underscored by the high stakes for all nations.

The gloomy backdrop for Obama's speech ? a world riven by deadly protests against an anti-Islamic video, by war in Syria, by rising tension over a nuclear Iran and more ? marked the dramatic shifts that have occurred in the year since the General Assembly's last ministerial meeting, when democratic uprisings in the Arab world created a sense of excitement and optimism. Obama had tough words for Iran and condemned anew the violence in Syria as Bashar al-Assad tries to retain power.

Six weeks before the U.S. presidential election, an unmistakable campaign element framed Obama's speech as well: The president's Republican rival, Mitt Romney, has tried to cast him as a weak leader on the world stage, too quick to apologize for American values.

Romney, speaking at a Clinton Global Initiative forum just miles from the U.N., avoided direct criticism of Obama in deference to the apolitical settings of the day, but he said he hoped to return a year later "as president, having made substantial progress" on democratic reforms.

Obama, likewise, avoided direct politicking in his speech but offered a pointed contrast to his GOP opponent's caught-on-tape comment that there is little hope for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

"Among Israelis and Palestinians," Obama said, "the future must not belong to those who turn their backs on a prospect of peace."

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's opening state-of-the-world speech to the General Assembly's presidents, prime ministers and monarchs sketched the current time as one when "too often, divisions are exploited for short-term political gain" and "too many people are ready to take small flames of indifference and turn them into a bonfire."

The leaders are assembled here as anger still churns over a made-in-America video that mocked the Prophet Muhammad. The video helped touch off protests throughout the Muslim world that have left at least 40 people dead, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya.

Obama, a onetime professor of constitutional law, delivered what amounted to a lecture on what he presented as the bedrock importance of free speech, even if it comes at a price.

He stressed that just as the "cruel and disgusting" video did not reflect U.S. values, the backlash against it did not represent the views of most Muslims. Still, he said, "the events of the last two weeks speak to the need for all of us to address honestly the tensions between the West and the Arab world that is moving towards democracy."

Obama said the notion of controlling information is obsolete in the Internet age, "when anyone with a cellphone can spread offensive views around the world with the click of a button." But he said leaders must be swift to respond to those who would answer hateful speech with violence and chaos.

In his last international address before the November elections, the president had strong words for the leaders in Iran and Syria but broke no new ground on any actions the U.S. might take.

He warned that while there is still hope of resolving the dispute over Iran's nuclear program through diplomacy, "that time is not unlimited." Without laying out specifics, he added: "The United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon."

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in an interview with The Associated Press, dismissed the question of Iran's nuclear ambitions and claimed that despite Western sanctions his country was better off than it was when he took office in 2005. And he said a new world order needs to emerge, away from American "bullying" and domination.

"God willing, a new order will come together and we'll do away with everything that distances us," Ahmadinejad said. "Now even elementary school kids throughout the world have understood that the United States government is following an international policy of bullying."

"Bullying must come to an end. Occupation must come to an end," he said in a wide-ranging interview on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

As for the rising violence in Syria, Obama told the U.N. delegates, "The future must not belong to a dictator who massacres his people. If there is a cause that cries out for protest in the world today, it is a regime that tortures children and shoots rockets at apartment buildings. We must remain engaged to assure that what began with citizens demanding their rights does not end in a cycle of sectarian violence."

In the AP interview, Ahmadinejad said Iran was one of nearly a dozen countries forming a new contact group to try to end the 18-month-old civil war in Syria. The group would include 10 or 11 countries in the Middle East and elsewhere and meet in New York "very soon," Ahmadinejad said.

Obama's defense of free speech was respectfully received by world leaders. Yet it was clear that different understandings abound on the proper exercise of free expression.

The foreign minister of Indonesia, home to the world's largest Muslim population, said Obama's speech was a "clarion call" for all nations to reject intolerance, calling it "an issue that galvanizes all of us." But Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa added that freedom of expression should be exercised with consideration to morality and public order.

Dina Zakaria, a spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood's political party Freedom and Justice, said cultural differences between the U.S. and the Muslim and Arab world over the limitations of freedom of expression will persist.

"No one can argue against freedom of expression, but the Western understanding of it is different from ours," she said. "Will this freedom allow for contempt of religion? For us it is different. For us it is a red line as Muslims and Christians as well."

Obama did not hesitate to underline some of the hopeful developments in the world under his watch.

"The war in Iraq is over, and our troops have come home," he said. "We have begun a transition in Afghanistan, and America and our allies will end our war on schedule in 2014. Al-Qaida has been weakened, and Osama bin Laden is no more. Nations have come together to lock down nuclear materials, and America and Russia are reducing our arsenals."

In one lighter moment in a somber speech, Obama drew laughter from the Assembly with one comment in his remarks on free speech: "I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day."

Sri Lanka university teachers' union to discuss with Labor Commissioner tomorrow

* Sri Lanka university teachers' union to discuss with Labor Commissioner tomorrow
Sun, Sep 23, 2012, 09:05 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Sept 23, Colombo: Sri Lanka's striking university teachers' union, Federation of University Teachers' Associations (FUTA) is to hold another discussion with the Commissioner of Labor to find a settlement to their over two-month long work strike.

The Commissioner of Labor has sent a letter to the FUTA asking them to come for a voluntary mediation.

The FUTA is engaged in a strike since July 04, demanding the government, among others, to grant a pay raise and allocate 6 percent of the country's GDP for education.

Accordingly, the FUTA is to participate in the discussion tomorrow (September 24) at the Labor Department, says the secretary of the FUTA Terrence Madujith.

However, he said that the FUTA would not appoint a representative to take forward the moves for a voluntary settlement without specific solutions to their demands.

FUTA has planned to start two protest marches from Galle and Kandy to Colombo tomorrow. The lecturers of the medical faculty of Peradeniya University have also decided to join the strike from tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the government media reported that nearly 200 of the 580 lecturers of the Kelaniya University have given up the trade union action and informed the Vice Chancellor that they will return to work.

Academics from several other universities have also expressed willingness to return to work, the media reports said.

Sri Lanka provides free education from the kindergarten through the universities. However, the spending for the education has been constantly declining and currently the government spends 1.9 percent of the GDP for education.

As a result of neglecting the education sector the facilities at government schools and universities are measly and in a poor state and the academics fear that if remedies are not made soon Sri Lanka's state as a country with the highest literacy rate in South Asia will soon be lost and a brain drain would be inevitable.

Auto Insurance Basics And Recommendations For Everyone ...

Car wreck

Why you need insurance!

Besides the purchase price of a car, one must also calculate the potential maintenance cost, and auto insurance cost. We often focus on the first two costs, but seldom do we realize the auto insurance cost differential until we?ve purchased the car!

I was so happy to negotiate $2,000 off the initial asking price of a $14,000, black on black, BBS wheels equipped 1997 M3 in 2003 that I didn?t realize my auto insurance would jump from just $500 a year to $2,000 a year!

Had I realized my auto insurance would jump so much, I probably would have negotiated even harder, or reconsidered buying a sports car altogether. Always get an auto insurance quote before you purchase a car please!

Having auto insurance is a law you don?t want to break. Accidents happen all the time whether they are your fault or not. If you end up wrecking someone else?s car and injuring a passenger, not having any car insurance could literally wipe you out financially and put you in poverty for the rest of your life!

AUTO INSURANCE BASICS

There are three things you want to protect with auto insurance in case of an accident: 1) You and your passengers, 2) Your assets, and 3) Your vehicle. Most people would choose protecting you and your passengers as the most important purpose of auto insurance. I would too. However, it all depends on how wealthy you are.

1) Insurance To Protect Your Financial Resources

Let?s say you are multi-millionaire who employs 10,000 people who depend on your existence to put food on the table. If you go down, so does the company. Protecting your financial assets might be more important than protecting you and your passengers sad to say! If you nod off and accidentally kill several pedestrians on the sidewalk, you can be sure you will be in a legal battle for multi-millions of dollars. You will be all over the news and you won?t be able to focus on running your company.

If you did the same thing and were poor, the victims or family of the deceased can?t squeeze blood from stone. As a result, you care less about protecting your own financial resources since you have little, and care more about protecting the passengers in your car. Of course, if you are the multi-millionaire, then you can afford to care for everything and get the most protection possible.

Bodily Injury Liability:?If you hurt someone in an auto accident, the insurance company will pay a certain amount.? In my case, I elected for $300,000/$500,000 per person/per accident.

Property Damage Liability:?If you damage someone else?s property in an auto accident, the insurance co will pay a certain amount. My insurance company pays $100,000 per accident to property.

2) Insurance To Protect You And Your Passengers

You can be the most careful driver in the world, but that is only half of the equation. If someone else is careless, they can easily crash into you and cause damage. Even though auto insurance is mandatory for all drivers, many drivers still do not have auto insurance! As a result, your insurance needs to protect you from others.

Uninsured Motorists Bodily Injury:?If an uninsured or underinsured driver injures you or your passengers. I elected $300,000/$500,000 per person/per accident.

Medical Payments:?Covers you or your passengers. If someone runs into you, or you run into someone else and have an injured passenger, you want to be able to provide financial coverage for any medical expenses they may incur. Hopefully, your passengers will not sue you if you don?t have such coverage, but it?s better to be safe than sorry. I have $100,000 per person.

Extended Benefits:?Wage earner disability benefits, essential services disability benefits, death benefits. If an auto accident causes so much physical or mental pain that you cannot return to work, your extended benefits beyond your company?s short term disability benefits will kick in if you do not have long term disability insurance. I pay $5.10 for minor distribution of all three. I have my life insurance and disability insurance from work to cover 100%.

3) Insurance To Protect Your Vehicle

One of the most wonderful things about driving a 12 year old vehicle is that it doesn?t cost much to replace. Moose, my SUV is probably worth no more than $3,500 anymore. If I was to get in a car accident, the cost to fix whatever part of Moose will probably cost at least $1,000. At this point, it?s better to just donate him to charity and consider buying another vehicle. As a result, I do not have comprehensive insurance.

Comprehensive: Covers damage caused by something other than another vehicle such as hail, theft, and collision with Bobo the bear. If you have a shiny new $50,000 BMW, you should get comprehensive insurance because you?ll want to fix it in an accident and you won?t want to pay thousands of dollars to do so. The more expensive your car and the more dependent on your car, the more you should consider getting comprehensive insurance.

Collision:?Covers damage to your vehicle caused by impact with an object other than an animal. Gray area here, given this is what comprehensive is for. I declined coverage.

Uninsured Motorists Property Damage:?If an uninsured driver damages your vehicle. If an uninsured motorist damages Moose, I will just ask him to pay for everything, otherwise, I will introduce him to my cousin Viktor, who will break his legs for non-payment.

Towing & Labor:?Provides emergency roadside assistance such as towing, flat tire, jump start, and delivery of gas. This service is a life saver! I?ve run out of gas, had an older car not start before for some reason, blew out my tire, left my lights on, and each time needed roadside assistance. Takes no more than 45 minutes to get everything fixed. I recommend everybody get towing & labor. I pay only $5.88 and I can?t believe it?s not at least $100 every 6 months.

AUTO INSURANCE RECOMMENDATIONS BY FINANCIAL SITUATION

Given everybody should have auto insurance, it is now up to you to taylor your auto insurance coverage to your needs. Here are four common scenarios and what type of insurance I recommend for each.

1997 BMW M3

My BMW M3 that caused my insurance to rocket

* You drive a fancy car which you probably can?t afford. Let?s say you are 28 years old, no family, and drive a new 2013 BMW 335i that costs $57,000. The problem is you only make $60,000 a year and therefore can?t really afford the car if you follow my 1/10th rule of car buying (pay no more than 1/10th your gross annual income for a car). Since you can?t afford the car and only perhaps the payments, you probably can?t afford any major repairs. My recommendation is to bite the bullet and get comprehensive auto insurance, collision, towing & labor, and uninsured motorist and property damage insurance. Since your car is literally making you poorer every month, you don?t need to get as much property and bodily injury liability insurance ironically. Your car is already a massive financial liability. You don?t want to make it an even greater liability without comprehensive coverage.

Estimated cost: $200-$300 a month depending on driving record and liability amounts.

* You drive a nice car and are rich. Let?s say you drive a 2013 Honda Accord that costs $38,000. You also make about $400,000 a year, have $3 million in assets, a wife, two daughters in high school, and paid cash for your Accord. You care most about insuring your passengers and your financial assets in case you are deemed negligent. The last thing you want is someone to sue you for $3 million dollars and put your family at risk. College is expensive! Hence, I would consider as much bodily injury and property liability insurance as possible. You should probably get comprehensive insurance with a higher deductible of around $1,000 given you have the assets. With a higher deductible, your monthly premiums are less. It is worth it to also get roadside assistance, collision, property damage, and uninsured motorist insurance. You should also consider an umbrella policy to cover you beyond your auto insurance.

Estimated cost: $50-$150 a month depending on driving record and liability amounts.

* You drive a beater, but can afford more. This is my situation where I drive a $3,500 dollar 12 year old SUV, but can afford something newer. I don?t own a nicer vehicle because I don?t sell my children and I?m pretty frugal, especially now that I?m retired. I do not have comprehensive insurance because if I bash Moose by mistake, I?ll just buy another car. If someone else bashes Moose, I?ll be mad, but at least his/her insurance will pay to replace Moose. My main concern is about getting sued if I?m at fault given I?ve got a good accumulation of assets in CDs, savings, private investments, stocks, bonds, and real estate. Hence,?I elected for $300,000/$500,000 per person/per accident for bodily insurance liability. I?m assuming $300,000 per person is enough and hope it never comes to it. I have a multi-million dollar umbrella policy.

Estimated cost: I pay about $45 a month.

* You drive a beater and are poor. Let?s say you have a non working spouse, no children, and drive a 1993 Honda Civic worth $1,000 and make $28,000 a year and have a total of $500 in net worth. I recommend you just get liability insurance with the lowest monthly premiums, and lowest liability payouts possible. The most anybody will be able to get from you is $500, which is not worth the hassle for most people. Spending $10 more a month in auto insurance is painful, hence your goal is to keep costs low, be a safe driver, and don?t get into any accidents. Remember, if someone else is found liable in your car accident, it is up to them to pay you, not the other way around.

Estimated cost: $30-$50 a month depending on driving record and liability amounts.

The right amount of insurance is different for everybody. Make sure you understand the various different options you have and weight the cost of coverage with the cost of your monthly premiums.

For a?FREE no obligation competitive?auto insurance?quote?that searches the best insurance rates by StateFarm, Nationwide, eSurance, and AllState?click here?or the banner. It is very important that everyone gets at least basic liability car insurance. You can total your car and be fine. But if you total someone else?s car and inure them, they can go after you for ALL your assets and wipe you out! Protect yourself!

Regards,

Sam

Your Moral Compass Is Reversible

On the contrary, the results show that many people actually read the altered questions to their answers correctly, and then still stand by their given answer, even though the meaning of the answer was effectively changed 180 degrees by changing the question.

"Is censorship bad?". You answer "Yes"
They then change the question to read "Is censorship good?" and ask you to read back the altered question and your answer.

The interesting part is not that half the test subjects fail to notice the changes. The interesting part is that, when asked to provide argument, about half the test subjects will argue *against* the position they held when they answered the unaltered question. In my example, thest subject would provide argument in favour of censorship, even though he was against it earlier.

A Ray of Hope

Today?s Good News for Romney:? A poll released today by the American Jewish Committee suggests that the chosen people?s love for Obama is eroding. Jews tend to veer Democratic, but only 69 percent of the Jews in Florida are prepared to vote for the incumbent. Seven out of 10 may sound like a lot, but it?s less than the 78 percent that went for Gore in 2000 or the 76 percent that supported Kerry in 2004. Most crucially, it?s also less than the 76 percent that turned out for Obama last election cycle.?

And the Sunshine State?s Jews will soon hear a new voice asking them to reconsider four more years. Starting tomorrow, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will appear on Florida TV stations in an ad sponsored (we think) by Romney fans. The Israeli prime minister will map the dangers of a nuclear Iran. Message: If he?s worried, you should be worried. Mazel tov, Mr. Romney.

Major changes needed to protect Australia's species and ecosystems

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? A landmark study has found that climate change is likely to have a major impact on Australia's plants, animals and ecosystems that will present significant challenges to the conservation of Australia's biodiversity.

The comprehensive study by CSIRO highlights the sensitivity of Australia's species and ecosystems to climate change, and the need for new ways of thinking about biodiversity conservation.

"Climate change is likely to start to transform some of Australia's natural landscapes by 2030," lead researcher, CSIRO's Dr Michael Dunlop said.

"By 2070, the ecological impacts are likely to be very significant and widespread. Many of the environments our plants and animals currently exist in will disappear from the continent. Our grandchildren are likely to experience landscapes that are very different to the ones we have known."

Dr Dunlop said climate change will magnify existing threats to biodiversity, such as habitat clearing, water extraction and invasive species. Future climate-driven changes in other sectors, such as agriculture, water supply and electricity supply, could add yet more pressure on species and ecosystems.

"These other threats have reduced the ability of native species and ecosystems to cope with the impacts of climate change," Dr Dunlop said.

One of the challenges for policy and management will be accommodating changing ecosystems and shifting species.

The study suggests the Australian community and scientists need to start a rethink of what it means to conserve biodiversity, as managing threatened species and stopping ecological change becomes increasingly difficult.

"We need to give biodiversity the greatest opportunity to adapt naturally in a changing and variable environment rather than trying to prevent ecological change," Dr Dunlop said.

The study highlights the need to start focusing more on maintaining the health of ecosystems as they change in response to climate change, from one type of ecosystem to another.

'This could need new expectations from the community, possibly new directions in conservation policy, and new science to guide management," Dr Dunlop said.

"To be effective we also need flexible strategies that can be implemented well ahead of the large-scale ecological change. It will probably be too late to respond once the ecological change is clearly apparent and widespread."

The study found the National Reserve System will continue to be an effective conservation tool under climate change, but conserving habitat on private land will be increasingly important to help species and ecosystems adapt.

The team of researchers from CSIRO carried out modelling across the whole of Australia, as well as detailed ecological analysis of four priority biomes, together covering around 80 per cent of Australia.

The study was funded by the Australian Government Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities, the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency and the CSIRO Climate Adaptation Flagship.

Happy Wordless Wednesday!

I love Little Brother's picture! ?Very neat to see him make figure drawings that are starting to resemble actual figures.

Just don't be mislead to think that I'm a cross between an insect and a guy walking/hovering on stilts.

And yes, Mom-E really does have 3 arms (that's how she gets so much stuff done). ?Either that or it's a tail and she's been?captured by the Gatos, too.

See you on Fatherhood Friday,

Error paves way as White Sox beat Tigers

CHICAGO (AP) ? Alex Rios went barreling into second base with a hard slide that teammate Gordon Beckham said might be the biggest play of the season for the White Sox as they try to win the AL Central.

Rios was trying to break up a double play and when he went into Detroit second baseman Omar Infante, it caused an errant throw that allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score Monday as the White Sox beat the Tigers 5-4 and went up three games in division.

"That's a situation where every second baseman knows we're coming in hard. And it was a clean slide, and we took advantage of that," Rios said. "We scored two runs on that play and ended up winning the game, so it was a big play."

The game had been postponed by rain last Thursday and Monday's makeup was the final meeting of the season between the two front runners in the division.

Detroit won the season series 12-6 and captured nine of the final 11 games between the teams, including two of three last week before the four-game series finale was postponed.

Each team has 16 games remaining. Chicago heads to Kansas City and Anaheim to finish out this week while Detroit goes home to face the Athletics and Twins.

"There is still a lot of time left for both teams. ... We just got to continue to grind and hope that what we do every day, day in and day out, is enough," Beckham said. "This is probably still going to go down to the wire."

Rios' fifth-inning slide was the talk of the locker room after the game as was Chicago's bullpen that pitched five scoreless innings after starter Jose Quintana struggled.

"That was a tough play for that second baseman to make that turn. I've been there before," Beckham said. "It's everything you can do to just get it off. What a great slide and I just told him (Rios) that might be the play of the year so far. Pretty special."

When Dayan Viciedo hit a one-out grounder to short, the Tigers tried to turn the inning-ending double play, but Rios' slide forced an errant throw from Infante that got by Prince Fielder as two runs scored, giving Chicago the lead. And then the bullpen held it.

"Rios got down there pretty good, we just didn't get the turn. Maybe if (Infante) could have come across the bag more," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "It was a tough double play. Rios got down there. When he hit it, I thought it was a sure double play."

Infante, who also made a costly error last Monday that helped the White Sox to a win, said he was spiked on the play by Rios, but offered no excuses.

"It's hard to do. It's hard to throw once he hit me," Infante said. "I have to make the throw. I feel bad because I've made a lot of errors knowing the team needed different."

Nate Jones (8-0) pitched 2 2-3 innings of one-hit relief and the White Sox won their fourth straight. Addison Reed, the last of three relievers in the ninth, got the final out for his 27th save in 31 chances.

Trailing 4-3, the White Sox loaded the bases for a third straight inning in the fifth, driving out Detroit starter Doug Fister (9-9).

Delmon Young drove in three runs for the Tigers with a pair of singles, but Detroit couldn't hold on to an early 3-0 lead. Tigers pitchers walked six and hit two batters.

Chicago loaded the bases again in the eighth and was on the verge of adding an insurance run when Adam Dunn hit a fly ball to left with one out. But before Beckham could cross the plate, Dewayne Wise was thrown out trying to go from second to third ? a double play that ended the inning. It ended up not costing the White Sox.

"I made a mistake there, I'll be the first guy to tell you. I almost blew it right there," Wise said. "I've been playing this game too long to make a mistake like. I'm just thankful that we pulled it out."

Neither starter got out of the fifth. Quintana, who beat the Tigers a week ago in his previous start, gave up seven hits and four runs in four. And Fister, who defeated the White Sox last Tuesday, gave up eight hits and five runs ? four ? earned, also in four innings.

Avisail Garcia, Gerald Laird and Austin Jackson hit consecutive singles to open the third for a 1-0 Detroit lead. After a sacrifice, Quintana intentionally walked Miguel Cabrera to load the bases. He then struck out Prince Fielder, but Young hit a two-run single to put the Tigers up three.

The White Sox had three singles off Fister to load the bases in the bottom half but the 6-foot-8 right-hander struck out Kevin Youkilis and Dunn to end the threat. Chicago tied it in the fourth when Beckham was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Wise had a two-run single.

Cabrera led off the fifth with a double and Fielder was ruled safe at first when Dunn fielded his grounder and flipped to Quintana covering. Chicago manager Robin Ventura came out for an explanation from first base umpire Mike Muchlinski and replays appeared to show that Quintana beat Fielder to the bag by a step.

Young followed with another RBI single to put the Tigers ahead 4-3.

Notes: Young, who had seven RBIs when the Tigers swept a series from the White Sox earlier this month in Detroit, has 28 RBIs in 40 games at U.S. Cellular Field. .. Tigers C Alex Avila was out of the starting lineup after colliding with Fielder on Sunday chasing a pop in Cleveland. He got a headache after batting practice. ... Wise was the White Sox's leadoff hitter a second straight game with Alejandro De Aza sitting out. Ventura said De Aza had been a bit out of sync.

Soyuz Spacecraft Carrying Russian-US Crew Headed Back to Earth

A Soyuz space capsule carrying two Russian cosmonauts and an American astronaut cast off from the International Space Station and began the journey back to Earth Sunday (Sept. 16), wrapping up a four-month stay in orbit.

The?Soyuz TMA-04M spacecraft?carrying NASA astronaut Joe Acaba and Russian cosmonauts Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin undocked from the station at 7:09 p.m. EDT (2309 GMT) as the two spacecraft flew high above Nairobi, Kenya. The trip back to Earth will take nearly four hours, with the Soyuz expected to land in the steppes of Kazakhstan at 10:53 p.m. EDT (0253 GMT Monday), though it will be just after sunrise at the landing site, NASA officials said.

The Soyuz's departure brings the space station's?Expedition 32?to a close. Padalka commanded the expedition, while Acaba and Revin served as flight engineers. Padalka handed the orbiting lab's reins over to NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, commander of the new Expedition 33 crew.

Expedition 33 will be a three-person operation for about a month. Williams, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and Japanese spaceflyer Akihiko Hoshide have the station to themselves until mid-October, when the arrival of three new astronauts will bring the $100 billion orbiting complex back up to its full complement of six crewmates.

Acaba, Padalka and Revin launched toward the station on May 14 and arrived three days later. The astronauts' four-month stint marked the first long-term stay aboard the orbiting lab for both Acaba and Revin.

Padalka, however, had lived on the station for long durations during two previous missions and commanded the outpost's Expedition 32 crew. It was his fourth mission and third time in command of the space station.

Acaba, Padalka and Revin got to be part of history shortly after they first floated through the space station's hatch. They were there to welcome SpaceX's robotic Dragon capsule, which on May 25 became the?first private spacecraft ever to visit?the 430-ton orbiting complex.

Dragon's historic flight was a demonstration mission, to see if the capsule and SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket are ready to begin a series of 12 contracted supply runs to the station for NASA. Everything went well, and the first of these bona fide cargo missions is likely to blast off next month.
