Verizon drops $2 'convenience' fee

Less than 24 hours after it announced it would charge a $2 "convenience fee" for every one-time online or phone payment customers make, Verizon Wireless reversed course after consumer outrage spilled onto the Web. The decision also came hours after it was made known that the FCC said it would investigate the new fee, which would have penalized those who make monthly payments via the Web or phone.

?At Verizon, we take great care to listen to our customers. Based on their input, we believe the best path forward is to encourage customers to take advantage of the best and most efficient options, eliminating the need to institute the fee at this time,? said Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer of Verizon Wireless, in a statement.

"The statement speaks for itself," said a Verizon Wireless spokesman to msnbc.com, when asked for more details about the carrier's decision.

The company planned to put the $2 fee into effect Jan. 15. That news also coincided with another PR nightmare for Verizon: the third outage this month of its new 4G wireless network. The problem, the carrier said, was tied to the "growing pains" of being a "pioneer" in offering the most extensive fourth-generation wireless service in the nation at this point.

In the past day, Change.org and other consumer groups organized online protests about the new fee; as of Friday morning, the petition at Change.org had more than 64,000 signatures from those upset about the charge.

Verizon had said the $2 fee was needed to "address costs incurred" because of "those customers who choose to make single bill payments in alternate payment channels (online, mobile, telephone)," and that the charge would be waived for those "who pay by electronic check or enroll in AutoPay" (or pay by snail mail).

Last month, Bank of America also reversed course after public upset over its plan to charge a $5 monthly fee to customers who used their debit cards to make purchases.

Ben Rattray, CEO of Change.org, said the decision was a huge victory for customers: "The era of corporations walking roughshod over consumers without consequence is officially over. Social media sites like Change.org are fundamentally shifting the balance of power from companies to consumers. Companies must now deal with an unprecedented new force: millions of customers hyper-connected and easily able to mobilize together in response to their actions.?

Wall St rises, on track for slim gains in 2011 (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? U.S. stocks rallied on Thursday, moving the S&P 500 back in positive territory for 2011 ahead of the last trading day of the year, on more positive signals on the U.S. economy.

The S&P 500 edged above its 200-day moving average, a key measure of the market's long-term momentum, but scant volume increased volatility, and made the gains harder to trust.

Europe's sovereign debt crisis has been the primary concern for U.S. investors in 2011. Mixed results on an auction of long-term Italian bonds was another sign bond markets remain worried about the euro zone.

With trading thin, the only bit of suspense left for U.S. investors is whether the S&P 500 will end positive for 2011 or not. It is now up 0.4 percent for the year, the closest it has been to unchanged for a year since 1970.

"Equities are gravitating towards that 1,260 mark on the S&P to get the end of the year in the green," said Joe Cusick, senior market analyst at optionsXpress.com in Chicago.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) shot up 135.63 points, or 1.12 percent, to 12,287.04 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) gained 13.38 points, or 1.07 percent, to 1,263.02. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) advanced 23.76 points, or 0.92 percent, to 2,613.74.

Banks were the biggest gainers along with commodity-related sectors, which sold off hard on Wednesday. JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) gained 2.4 percent to $33.42. The S&P financial index (.GSPF) rose 1.6 percent, while the capital goods sector (.GSPIC) added 1.3 percent. Shares of Dow component Caterpillar (CAT.N) advanced 1.4 percent to $90.58 while Alcoa (AA.N), another Dow stock, rose 1.3 percent to $8.63.

Cusick added that strength in offensive sectors like banks, materials and industrials "could be a catalyst for stocks to end the year higher."

Italian bond yields, which helped break a five-day rally with a sharp selloff in the last session, eased on Thursday after a debt auction.

Stocks added to gains after the euro erased losses against the dollar, rebounding from a 15-month low in thin trading.

But the yield on 10-year Italian bonds hovered near 7 percent, a level markets see as a danger zone for Italy's government debt.

Pending sales of existing U.S. homes surged to a 1-1/2 year high in November, offering more signs of a tentative housing recovery. That report drove the Dow Jones home builders index (.DJUSHB) up 4.3 percent.

In addition, factory activity kept growing in the U.S. Midwest in December, as purchasing managers reported rising prices and employment, even though production eased slightly.

On the down side, initial claims for jobless benefits rose more than expected, giving a mixed labor picture, but investors said the trend was still lower.

Recent economic data, including reports on housing, have been largely positive, contributing to stocks' gains over the past month and bolstering the view that economic growth is picking up steam.

"We have seen a pretty encouraging trend in the U.S. economic data over the last two months," said Peter Jankovskis, co-chief investment officer of OakBrook Investments in Lisle, Illinois. "If that trend continues, that will provide good support and perhaps some upward momentum."

The next big test for markets in terms of U.S. economic data will be the December payrolls report at the end of next week.

For the year, the Dow is up 6.1 percent and the S&P 500 is up 0.4 percent, while the Nasdaq is down 1.5 percent.

Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) shares dipped 0.02 percent to $173.86. Goldman Sachs said the online retailer's sales growth in the current holiday quarter could miss expectations.

Diamond Foods Inc (DMND.O) shares rose 7.2 percent to $31.51 after CNBC reported rumors that high-profile investor David Einhorn may have invested in the company.

About 4.16 billion shares exchanged hands on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and the Nasdaq, well below the year's daily average of about 7.9 billion shares. On the NYSE, four stocks rose for every one that fell. On the Nasdaq, advancers beat decliners by a ratio of more than 2 to 1.

Missing Ind. girl found dead, babysitter charged

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) ? The neighbor who was babysitting a 9-year-old Indiana girl when she went missing last week will be formally charged with murder Tuesday, a heartbreaking turn for the girl's relatives who considered him a family friend.

Authorities said Monday night that Aliahna Lemmon had been found dead and Mike Plumadore, who was watching Aliahna and her two sisters when she went missing Friday, was being held on a murder charge. He and Aliahna's family lived in the same mobile home park in Fort Wayne.

"He was a trusted family friend," Aliahna's step-grandfather, David Story, told The Associated Press late Monday, saying he was surprised by the arrest.

Plumadore, 39, is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning.

He was arrested after being interviewed by police, Allen County sheriff's spokesman Cpl. Jeremy Tinkel said. Investigators said Aliahna's body was found in the northeastern Indiana county, but no details were released.

On Monday, FBI agents descended on the rundown mobile home park where Aliahna lived and was last seen. It's a known haven for registered sex offenders, though Plumadore is not on Indiana's registered sex offenders list. He has a criminal record in Florida and North Carolina that includes convictions for trespassing and assault.

No active search was done Sunday for Aliahna, though more than 100 emergency workers searched for her Saturday around the mobile home park. Tinkel said the same size search could not be sustained because of the Christmas holiday.

Aliahna's mother, Tarah Souders, told The Journal Gazette earlier Monday that her daughter had vision, hearing and emotional problems and suffered from attention deficit disorder. Aliahna and her sisters were staying with Plumadore because their mother had been sick with the flu and Aliahna's stepfather works at night and sleeps during the day.

Plumadore told the newspaper Sunday that he left the three girls in his mobile home about 6 a.m. Friday and went to a gas station about a mile away to buy a cigar. Authorities have said the store's surveillance video shows him there about that time.

"I had dead-bolted the door," he said. "When I got back, all the girls was here."

He said he smoked his cigar and went back to sleep, then woke up about 10 a.m. when Aliahna's mother called. After that call, he realized the door to the home was unlocked and that Aliahna was gone. He said Aliahna's 6-year-old sisters told him Aliahna had left with her mother.

Plumadore said it wasn't until he talked with Aliahna's mother about 8:30 p.m. that they realized she was missing and police were notified. Souders said the miscommunication caused the delay in determining that Aliahna had vanished.

"She's never wandered off," she said earlier Monday.

Elizabeth Watkins, who lives nearby, said residents are cautious and keep to themselves in part because of the number of sex offenders living in the mobile home park. According to a state website, 15 registered sex offenders live in the park that numbers about two dozen homes. Watkins and she didn't know Plumadore and was shocked when told of the girl's death.

"I'm numb, I'm totally numb. I don't know what to think," she said.

Back in campaign mode, presidential hopefuls focus

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Republicans in search of their party's presidential nomination are returning to campaign mode after a brief Christmas respite, with Rick Santorum planning a hunting trip with conservatives in Iowa and Mitt Romney phoning supporters.

With just a week until Iowa holds its leadoff caucuses and many caucus-goers undecided, the final push ahead of the Jan. 3 contests was heading into a critical time. Campaigns planned new television ads and phone calls to persuade holdouts still weighing their options.

Romney, who kept this state at arm's length for most of the year, seemed to increase his efforts in Iowa as polls found him in a stronger position. He planned to talk with supporters in a series of telephone calls here and to New Hampshire and Florida on Monday between working on a speech that aides described as his final pitch to Iowans. Romney planned to deliver that speech Tuesday evening and then set out on a bus tour of Iowa.

However, he was to share the highways with Rep. Michele Bachmann, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. All scheduled bus tours to start then, too.

Each is running out of time and looking to derail Rep. Ron Paul, the Texas congressman who seems to have the most sophisticated network of volunteers ready to organize for the caucuses. Paul was to return to Iowa this week to meet with supporters he has kept in touch with since his unsuccessful run in 2008.

Others, too, were ready to turn on their own political machines and put fresh ads on the air.

Gingrich, who last week criticized the negative tone of the campaign, was preparing to directly challenge Romney on the economy, an issue Romney has made central to his campaign. Gingrich's standing in public and private polls has slipped as he faced unrelenting criticism from the candidates and their allies.

Gingrich was expected to use clips from Romney's previous campaigns distancing himself from President Ronald Reagan and pitch his own economic plan as "Reaganomics 2.0." Gingrich also was expected to compare Romney's tax plan with his own.

Romney released a new TV ad in Iowa on Monday that touts him as a conservative businessman and in which he says "it is a moral imperative for America to stop spending more money than we take in."

"It's killing jobs and it's keeping our kids from having the bright prospects they deserve," he says in the spot. "The experience of balancing budgets is desperately needed in Washington and I will take it there."

Santorum, meanwhile, planned to announce support from another wave of Iowa conservatives. He scheduled a pheasant hunting trip in Adel for Monday afternoon. While he trails in polls and has not spent significant money on ads, Santorum is hoping his nonstop courtship of Iowans yields a late surge. He visited all 99 of Iowa's counties during the summer ? an accomplishment Bachmann has feverishly tried to replicate.

Bachmann, a congresswoman from Minnesota, last week darted through small towns, reminding voters that Santorum lost his 2006 re-election bid in a blowout and that Paul's foreign policy views were outside the party's orthodoxy.

Looking to recapture voters' interest, her plan was to return to hand-to-hand campaigning Tuesday and paint herself as the only acceptable conservative in the race.

"You can always count on me to stay true to my word and put America and Americans first," she said in a fundraising email sent Monday. "I am the consistent conservative who will put our nation back on a path towards prosperity and restore our values to government."

Perry, too, was looking to keep up the message that his rivals are insiders unable to change Washington. He planned to resume his tour bus on Tuesday.

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman kept his focus on New Hampshire. Huntsman said early in the campaign that he would not compete in Iowa and instead make his start in New Hampshire, which comes second on the nominating calendar with a Jan. 10 primary.

Booming military simulation industry in Central Florida

ORLANDO --?

After eight years, the war in Iraq is finally over and the troops are headed home.

That means more people will enter the job market in an already tight labor race.

But there?s a military secret right here in Central Florida that is worth hundreds of millions of dollars to our local economy.

?First of all that?s less resources that?s committed on the ground in Iraq. With the state of public finance nationally, the size of the deficit, the national debt that?s over $15 trillion dollars now, this is a savings that will be able to be rolled back into other things and perhaps reducing that deficit somewhat,? explained University of Central Florida financial expert Sean Snaith.

Snaith says there are the obvious impacts as troops are coming home, and they?ll need jobs.

?So they?ll come back, just like students graduating from school, to a very difficult labor market,? said Snaith.

As ugly as war is, there is some good news: it drives the economy.

Much of battle now is based on technology, and in Central Florida, a booming industry has been birthed.

It has the nickname: ?Modeling Simulation Capital of the World.?

Many don?t even know it exists in our own backyard.

Neighboring UCF is a high tech military base.

?It?s amazing. It?s sort of the best kept-big impact secret,? said Cpt. Bill Reuter, of the Navy.

It?s an operation that?s all encompassing.

?In this area, the Air Force, the Army, the Marine Corp, the Joint Forces Command - all of the other entities within the DOD and even some of the Homeland Security have set up shop here to leverage what we?ve got, leveraging the university, leveraging industry,? said Reuter.

This major alliance is driving dollars into Central Florida.

?Nearly $5 billion a year goes through this organization, and not just the Navy, but all of the services combined,? said Reuter.

It does so through cutting edge technology.

?We are the folks that provide training through simulation, so that people don?t, the DOD does not have to spend the money on steaming ships, flying airplanes, all of the fuel costs. All of the energy costs that go into all of that, we are the place to actually put the money,? explained Reuter.

That money doesn?t stay within the U.S. government.

It gets spent with local contractors.

Just the Marine division, alone, pumps hundreds of millions through Central Florida companies.

?This new fiscal year, we?ll do about $350 million of new work, most of those contracts we?ll award here locally, a lot of that work will be done with some of our industry partners in Central Florida,? said Col. David Smith.

The University of Central Florida plays a large role as well.

It?s the first school offering a Masters and PhD program in modeling and simulation and grads are getting jobs.

?What continues to be great about this entity and when I look into the crystal ball of the future of this area, and the modeling and simulation industry in this area, it is nothing but good news,? said Reuter.

More than 2,500 people work in Central Florida's "hub" of the simulation industry.

The technology extends into the medical and entertainment industries.

Because of the pending winter storm, if the public is having trouble with their mobile device in reaching 511, they can connect to 511 by calling 1-800-432-4269.

The transportation department says it is currently working on the situation and hopes to have the problem solved soon.

Asia Markets: Japan stocks catch up with gains; Seoul drops

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) ? Japanese stocks jumped on Monday to catch up with broad gains in global equity markets after Friday?s holiday, while Chinese shares fluctuated between gains and losses in choppy year-end trading.

2011 was a year of conflict, a year of tragedy, and for some a year of hope. Take a look back at the most important news and events of the year.

Japan?s Nikkei Stock Average /quotes/zigman/5986735 JP:NIK +1.23% climbed 1.1% in morning-session trade, aided by Friday?s strong finish on Wall Street and upbeat U.S. economic data.

?It appears concerns the U.S. housing market might deteriorate even further have receded and that a gradual recovery is becoming more likely,? Daiwa Research strategist Kazuhiro Miyake wrote in a note to clients.

Miyake said the stock market performance hinges on yen movements, and that while the yen might continue to appreciate over the long term, it could fall against the U.S. dollar in 2012 ?due to possible recovery in the U.S. economy.?

China?s Shanghai Composite /quotes/zigman/1859015 CN:000001 -0.28% ?was down 0.1% in choppy trading after moving in both directions. The index is still down more than 21% so far this year, including nearly 5.5% in losses suffered this month.

South Korea?s Kospi /quotes/zigman/1652118 KR:0100 -0.37% ?traded 0.6% lower, and Taiwan?s Taiex gave up 0.3%, reversing early gains.

Stock markets in Hong Kong, Australia and Singapore were among those closed for holidays.

Chinese financial and airline stocks were among the losers on concerns about a weakening economic momentum. Some resource sector stocks advanced after recent losses, with Baoshan Iron & Steel Co. /quotes/zigman/1866975 CN:600019 +0.62% ?rising 1%, while Minmetals Development Co. /quotes/zigman/1863450 CN:600058 +0.64% gained 1.3%.

Shipbuilidng and financial stocks led the decline in Seoul, with Shinhan Financial Group Co. /quotes/zigman/331649/quotes/nls/shg SHG +0.69% ?dropping 1.6% and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. /quotes/zigman/324630 DWOTF 0.00% ?falling 3.7%.

Asus prevede di vendere 3-6 milioni di tablet nel prossimo anno, sia con Android che con Windows 8

Con l?Asus Transformer Prime alle porte il CEO?Jonney Shih si permette di predire ?alti? numeri per quanto riguarda le future vendite dei suoi tablet. E addirittura si sente cos? forte da poter dire che Asus riuscir? a piazzare sul mercato dalle 3 alle 6 milioni di tavolette nel solo anno 2012. Una prospettiva davvero notevole, non credete?

Il CEO di Asus,Jonney Shih, ha detto che si aspetta che la sua compagnia riesca a ?piazzare? tra i 3 milioni e i 6 milioni di tablet l?anno prossimo, un grande salto visto che per quest?anno Asus si aspettava di vendere 1,8 milioni di tavolette.?Shih crede che il suo nuovo Prime Transformer sia davvero attraente per il pubblico perch?,?a differenza dell?iPad, offre una tastiera hardware.?

Sappiamo per? come un certo numero di unit? di Transformer Prime siano afflitti da un problema al segnale della connessione Wi-Fi anche se?Asus, proprio per rimediare, sta offrendo un programma di scambio per tutti i clienti che hanno le unit? difettose.?

Shih ha anche confermato che Asus sar? presto disponibile con il nuovo sistema operativo Windows 8 sul quale il CEO Asus crede davvero moltissimo. Infatti afferma che il nuovo OS cambier? il modo con cui tutti si sono abituati ad usare il tabelt.?Non ? chiaro quando i dispositivi con Windows 8 ?colpiranno? il mercato, visto che il sistema operativo non ? previsto fino alla seconda met? del 2012.?

Insomma Asus ? davvero agguerrita e chiss? che le previsioni non vengano rispettate?voi che dite?

Google makes custom holiday videos

The holiday season is here and just about everyone's getting into the spirit of things?? even Google. The search engine giant has set up a website which allows folks to send delightful (and customized) video greetings to their friends.

The site is called Send a Call From Santa and it?? as that name reveals?? lets you create and send messages which appear to be made by dear ol' Santa.

All you have to do is click through a handful of prompts which ask about you and your message's recipient. (Some of the questions may seem silly, but you'll understand why they're necessary as soon as you preview the first video.)

Once you've gotten through the questions, you'll be asked how you wish to send your video greeting?? via email or Google+. Make that choice and that's it?? your friend will receive a video like this one:
