Team USA advances to Semifinal Contest Against Sweden

TECUMSEH, Ont. - Evan Allen (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and Hudson Fasching (Burnsville, Minn.) notched two goals each, as the U.S. National Under-17 Team outlasted Canada Pacific, 4-2, at the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge here tonight at Tecumseh Arena. With the win, Team USA improves to 3-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) and earns a spot in the semifinals.

(North Branch, Minn.) turned aside 17 shots for Team USA in the win, while Comrie made 34 saves for Canada Pacific in the loss.

"The effort our team put forward was the difference in tonight's game," said Don Granato, head coach of the U.S. National Under-17 Team. "We're thrilled to move forward in this tournament and I'm proud of how the guys stepped up."

Team USA outshot Canada Pacific, 17-8, in the first period, but found itself down 1-0 at the first intermission, as Canada Pacific scored on a deflection at 12:30 for the lone goal of the frame.

Allen knocked in an Anthony Louis (Winfield, Ill.) pass at the top of crease to even the score 52 seconds into the second stanza. Will Butcher (Sun Prairie, Wis.) also earned an assist on the tally. Team USA took the lead at 5:03 when Allen buried another Louis pass into the net. Michael Downing (Canton, Mich.) collected the second assist on the goal.

Fasching helped the U.S. open a two-goal lead 52 seconds into the third period. Working from the corner, Fasching made his way to the front of the net and lifted the puck over the outstretched pad of Eric Comrie. J.T. Compher (Northbrook, Ill.) and Tyler Motte (St. Clair, Mich.) registered assists on the marker. Fasching's second tally of the night, scored at 5:07, put the U.S. up, 4-1. Motte and Compher teamed up again to find Fasching for the goal.

Down three scores, Canada Pacific pulled its goaltender with 1:50 remaining in favor of the extra attacker and earned a power-play opportunity shortly thereafter. With the six-on-four man advantage, Canada Pacific netted a goal at 19:34 to inch closer to the U.S., but Team USA held strong and skated away with a 4-2 victory.

Hunter Miska (North Branch, Minn.) turned aside 17 shots for Team USA in the win, while Comrie made 34 saves for Canada Pacific in the loss.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team will face Sweden in the semifinals tomorrow (Jan. 3) at 2:00 p.m. EST. The game will be held at WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ont. A full schedule is below.
