Egypt's ex-PM convicted of corruption

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian court has convicted a former prime minister on corruption charges and sentenced him to three years in prison.

Ahmed Nazif was also fined 4.5 million Egyptian pounds, or about $750,000.

Thursday's conviction stemmed from charges that said Nazif illegally amassed a fortune of 64 million Egyptian pounds, or $10.5 million.

He is one of dozens of stalwarts of Hosni Mubarak's regime who are in custody on corruption charges or serving prison terms.

Nazif is already serving a seven-year term for his role in awarding contracts for supplying new car license plates without going through legal procedures. He is to serve the longer sentence.

Mubarak is serving a life sentence for failing to prevent the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising that forced him out of office.
